Membership at AAL
Every landscape architect in Alberta reaches this point eventually: the moment when practicing the profession means more than technical skill, it means being recognized by the people who understand the work. AAL membership is that recognition. It connects you to a community that shapes public space across the province, from urban parks to rural site planning, and it gives your practice the professional standing clients and employers expect.
Categories built around where you are
Membership isn't one-size-fits-all. It reflects your stage in the profession and your role in the field.
- Full Member — for licensed landscape architects actively practicing in Alberta, with full voting rights and standing to use the LA designation.
- Intern Member — for graduates working toward licensure under the supervision of a Full Member, gaining the hours and experience required for certification.
- Associate Member — for allied professionals, educators, or retired practitioners who remain connected to the field without holding an active license.
- Student Member — for those enrolled in accredited landscape architecture programs, offering early access to resources and mentorship.
What eligibility actually looks like
Requirements vary by category but generally involve a recognized degree in landscape architecture, verified work experience, and, for Full Members, successful completion of the national licensing exam. AAL reviews applications individually, because career paths in this field rarely follow a straight line.
What membership brings you
Beyond credibility, members gain access to continuing education, project peer review, advocacy on provincial policy affecting the built and natural environment, and a network of practitioners who understand the specific challenges of designing for Alberta's climate and communities.
